About Rob McNamara
Rob McNamara has been in the upholstery business for 40 years. Starting in 1974 at 13 years of age sweeping the floors, he then began his apprenticeship at 15. At age 18 he opened up his first upholstery business in 1979 in Brisbane. He first came to Cairns in 1986 and after working in the industry for another 11 years he then opened up his present business in 1997 and has been servicing Cairns and the surrounding areas ever since.
As a highly experienced upholsterer, there’s not much Rob can’t do. Over the years he has worked on many jobs doing recovery and restoration of all kinds of furniture and vehicles in a wide range of fabrics and finishes.
His experience includes all aspects of domestic upholstery, marine fit outs, auto upholstery (a lot of car roof linings due to the humidity), and commercial fit-outs such as restaurants, offices etc. He has worked extensively with the health industry including Cairns Base Hospital, Qld Health and Arc Disability services.
Each year he does the upholstery for Cairns Wheelchair Clinic for ARC Disabilities and Queensland Health where he modifies wheelchairs for the special needs of children. He also provides regular service to Cairns Honda and ScooterCo as well as other motorcycle companies recovering motorbike seats.
His speciality and favourite work is high-end antique and retro furniture restoration.
Rob has reached a stage where he is no longer interested in empire building. These days he wants a business/life where he can produce work that he is proud of, have good personal relations with his clients, as well as having a comfortable life.
Rob does ALL the work from start to finish and in doing so he stakes his reputation on each and every job. He always tries to make sure that the finished product is better than the original was even when it was brand new. His motto is “My word is my bond”.
